Examples from DWBT |
About the examplesWelcome to the live examples from the book Designing Web-Based Training by William Horton. Here you can point and click and type and interact with the examples found throughout the book. Where did these examples come from? Most of these examples came from the consulting work done by Bill and Kit Horton as William Horton Consulting, Inc. Some were from production systems, some were prototypes, and a few were experiments to test the limits of technology. They have been sanitized. That means we substituted fictitious companies and people's names so as not to embarrass anyone other than ourselves. Several have been simplified to make them better illustrate a point or to remove requirements for unnecessary plug-ins or applets. Many have been put into a common format to lessen visual shock as you flit from one to another. What technology do they require? Most of the examples run fine in just a 4.0 browser on Windows or Macintosh operating systems. Most use JavaScript. Few require plug-ins, and none use Java applets Exceptions are noted on the page describing the individual examples. Here are the minimal and ideal setups for experiencing the examples.
To see how your browser stacks up against our requirements, visit our Requirements Test page. Can I copy these examples? No. The ideas behind the examples are free for all to use. And you are welcome to link to these examples. However, all the examples themselves are copyright William Horton Consulting, Inc. That includes the HTML, style-sheets, scripts, graphics, and text. If you really want to use one of these examples as-is or nearly so, contact us. Hey, we're consultants, we'll be happy to license them or build something similar for you. We'd also be glad to show you how to create your own. Limitations of the examplesOut of contextMost of the examples are individual pages, heartlessly ripped from the context in which they originally appeared. That means they are not linked to the whole site or all their related pages. It also means you will need to read the description page to understand where they fit in the cosmic scheme of WBT. Within some of these example pages are links to other example pages. These links bypass the explanation pages and go directly to the example. To see the explanation pages, use the table of contents or index in the left pane. Form informationSome of the examples are forms designed to capture information and send it back to the server for processing. If you choose to fill in these example forms and submit the information, rest assured that the form data will go absolutely nowhere. You will be sent to a "Nowhere" page instead. Not exactly as shown in bookWe are constantly changing and improving these examples. In some cases the examples are not exactly the same as the ones shown in the book, or even the same as the last time you saw them on the site. Solution: Check back often. No whine zoneThese examples are provided free of charge without any guarantee written, oral, or telepathically implied. If you have suggestions for improving them, sure we'd like to hear your ideas. But if not every feature of every example works all the time, that's par. Especially in 4.0.X browsers or anything designated beta. Here are the available examples ...
